The Problem
Creating believable nature in 3D is slow, fragile, and cognitively expensive.
Through user research and community feedback, three core friction points emerged:
Technical Overload – Artists had to wrestle with complex scattering systems and LOD management, breaking creative flow.
The Repetition Trap – Even high-quality assets felt artificial when scattered, destroying realism.
Performance Anxiety – Large scenes caused viewport lag and crashes, forcing trade-offs between quality and speed.
Users weren’t asking for more assets.
They wanted a system that understood the rules of nature, so they could focus on art instead of parameters.
My Role & Impact
As Product Designer, I helped evolve Graswald from a collection of assets into a cohesive, user-centered platform.
I led the design of the G-Library and scattering workflows, translating complex photometric scan data into an interface that felt fast, visual, and approachable. I redesigned asset previews to surface meaningful variation and ecological context, and iterated on the “select → scatter → see results” loop to feel instantaneous.
During Graswald’s strategic pivot toward Graswald.ai, I also helped prepare the library and UX for a massive influx of new, less-technical users when the assets were released publicly.
Impact
Became an industry staple for its quality–speed balance
Successfully supported a transition to a free library during a 3.3M seed round
Shipped 7 Ecotopes and 145+ species in a UI that scales without overwhelming
Reduced the environment build time from hours to minutes for many users
