The Problem
Most AI assistants are trapped in a chatbox.
Through user research, I found that while people were excited about AI’s potential, daily usage dropped because of two core frictions:
Prompt Fatigue – Users were faced with an empty input and the burden of knowing what to ask and how to ask it.
Context Loss – Living in a single tab, assistants had no awareness of meetings, documents, or conversations happening elsewhere, making them feel like an extra task rather than a helper.
Instead of reducing cognitive load, AI tools were adding to it. Users wanted an assistant that felt less like software to manage and more like a thoughtful partner that anticipated needs and fit naturally into their workflow.
My Role & Impact
As the Product Designer, I led the end-to-end design of LauraGPT with a focus on transforming a reactive chatbot into a proactive, context-aware assistant.
I redesigned the interaction model from a “pull” system—where users must constantly prompt—to a “push” system, where the AI surfaces relevant suggestions based on activity and intent. This included designing an adaptive HUD that responds to context across tools, as well as a visual memory system that makes the assistant’s knowledge transparent and controllable.
A core part of my role was defining Laura’s digital personality. I led persona design, microcopy, and visual motion to ensure the assistant felt calm, supportive, and human, present without being intrusive. I also designed a permissions and trust layer that balanced utility with privacy, giving users granular control over what the AI could access.
Impact
Reduced reliance on manual prompting through anticipatory UI patterns
Improved user trust by making context and memory visible and editable
Shifted user perception from “chatbot” to “digital chief of staff.”
